Melodies of the Sitar

In this gorgeous and touching picture book, a young girl bonds with her grandmother over sitar music and learns to cope with her grief when Nani passes away.

Maya loves listening to her grandmother as she plays the sitar. As Nani strums the instrument, the room is filled with soothing melodies. Nani’s songs are of love and hope and evoke family memories. When Nani starts to teach Maya to play the sitar, it’s not easy. Maya’s fingers fumble on the strings and the instrument feels bulky on her lap. But Nani assures her that practice will make it easier. And it does, as Maya spends her days strumming endlessly.

Before long, Maya and Nani are sitting together, creating beautiful melodies and strengthening their special bond. Each note they play together weaves new memories into their family tree. But then Nani gets ill and passes away. Maya feels lost without her grandmother. Can Maya find a way back to the music and the memories that Nani gave her?

Back matter includes information about the sitar and how memories can help one move past grief.
